Deadline nears for comments on propane program
2004-06-07

June 3, 2004 (Jefferson City)--Missouri's propane users have the opportunity to provide input on a variety of programs designed to reduce homeowner energy costs and improve safety.

From now until June 25, consumers are invited to submit comments regarding education, safety and rebate programs administered by the Missouri Propane Education and Research Council (MO-PERC).  The Council is a not-for-profit organization established by state law to promote the use of this safe, clean-burning alternative fuel.  MO-PERC estimates that approximately 12% of Missouri's homes use propane for heating, hot water and cooking.  MO-PERC's budget for Fiscal Year 2005 totals nearly $1.7 million for the 12-month period beginning July 1.

The bulk of the budget -- $600,000 -- is set aside for appliance rebates.  Currently, MO-PERC offers several rebates for purchases of propane water heaters in newly constructed homes or those which replace electrict or natural gas water heaters.  A propane water heater can save a homeowner several hundred dollars in energy costs over the life of the appliance, when compared with electric models.  U.S. Department of Energy cost comparisons show that propane is more than twice as efficient as electricity, based on cost per million Btu.  The water heater rebate program is available only through propane dealers who have registered to participate; customers should check with their local supplier for details.

Other programs include statewide safety training for industry employees, rebates to replace single-state regulators, consumer education, participation at the Missouri State Fair, and safety schools for firefighters.

To provide written comments, send them to:  Propane Programs, MO-PERC, 4110 Country Club Dr., Jefferson City MO  65109.
